September 1, 2024 -- The Westport Book Shop is pleased to welcome local artist Rebecca Ross as guest exhibitor for the month of September at the Book Shop's Drew Friedman Art Place. Rebecca will be exhibiting a selection of watercolor paintings that she created as illustrations for a newly published children’s book, In the Beginning: A Love Story, written by Westport author Michael Hendricks.
Rebecca Ross is an illustrator; she is fluent in various mediums, including drawing, painting, and printmaking, and she uses them all to create her work. Rebecca is excited to share this book which features 14 full-spread watercolor illustrations.
“The best part of this project is looking back on the hard work and the progress I made as a painter and illustrator,” said Rebecca.
This is Rebecca and Michael’s first children’s book collaboration.
Rebeca holds a degree in illustration from Pratt Institute. Since Pratt, Rebecca has worked as a freelancer, muralist, waitress, baker, and art teacher. She has organized art shows, showed her work in galleries, and most recently you can find her working as a farm hand on a high production organic vegetable farm.
Michael Hendricks is a local author who has published two mystery novels. This is his first children’s book.
The Westport Book Shop will hold a reception and book signing for Rebecca and Michael on Sunday afternoon, September 8, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Space is limited; please RSVP to the Book Shop at 203-349-5141 or by email to bookshop@westportbooksaleventures.org
Rebecca Ross’ artwork will be on exhibit at the Book Shop through September 30, 2024. Although the original paintings on display are not for sale, copies of the book In the Beginning: A Love Story will be available for purchase throughout the month and at the reception.
The art exhibit is open to the public during the Book Shop's regular business hours: Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from Noon to 5 p.m. Rebecca Ross' artwork will be on exhibit through September 30, 2024.
Westport Book Shop, a nonprofit independent used book store, is downtown Westport’s only source for gently used and antiquarian books, vintage vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and audio books. It is located at 23 Jesup Road, right across Jesup Green from the Westport Library.
The Book Shop’s “Drew Friedman Art Place” is an area of the store dedicated to exhibiting the work of community artists year-round, on a rotating basis. Miggs Burroughs, a Trustee of the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center, and a founding member of The Artists Collective of Westport, curates these exhibits, which change monthly.
